Socio Technical Simulation Tool (ST2)

Testing complex software systems

How do you test software systems with complex human-machine interactions? Early testing is often too expensive or complex for domain experts. Therefore, evaluation of requirements and concepts usually take place after the system is implemented, making it harder and more expensive to implement changes. The Socio Technical Simulation Tool (ST2) enables domain experts with little technical knowledge to test and simulate task models, user interfaces, and levels of automation in an early development phase. ST2 is an example of a model driven development tool: user interfaces and interactions are derived from workflows. Such workflows can describe protocols for resource management and fire control.

The workflow models that drive ST2 can be designed graphically and are relatively easy to understand. ST2 is used to test current and future manning concepts on vessels of the Royal Netherlands Navy. The ST2 tool can identify bottlenecks in terms of task load and timelines, which can be used to optimize the efficiency and amount of personnel required on vessels. Furthermore, the tool can also be used in real-time to determine if there are enough personnel available to resolve situations described in workflows.

TNO & Eaglescience

Together with TNO, Eaglescience develops the ST2 tool. Eaglescience is responsible for the technical implementation, while TNO designs requirements and delivers use cases.
