On Wednesday 19 October 2016, Amsterdam Dance Event and Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam presented Polaris at the official opening ceremony of ADE 2016 on Museum Square.

Polaris is a large-scale light installation that animates in accordance with our emotional response to music. Polaris was performed live by Fatima Yamaha, Nick Verstand, Nikki Hock, and Children of the Light. During the 25 minute audiovisual experience, 20 participants in the audience participated in a scientific experiment, wearing EEG sensors that directly measured the brainwaves. These measurements and readings were translated to algorithms that indicated emotion. They triggered the installation in real-time, so that artist and audience co-created the piece together.

Polaris is a collaborative project by Nick Verstand, Fatima Yamaha, Nikki Hock, Children of the Light, Pandelis Diamantides, Showsync, TNO, Eaglescience, Red Light Radio, ADE and Stedelijk Museum. It was developed – as part of ADE Sound Lab – and presented with the kind support of Stimuleringsfonds Creatieve Industrie / Creative Industries Fund NL, COMMIT and Amsterdams Fonds voor de Kunst.

Eaglescience, as participant of COMMIT-project Art Designed through Emotions (ADE), developed a mobile application that collected data from 20 people simultaneously while listening to music. These data were transferred to a server, where the crowd emotions were calculated and presented with lights on the Museum Square Amsterdam.
